Methodology

We don't pick suppliers. PUCO does.

The lowest rate you see here is the same lowest rate Ohio's official Apples-to-Apples comparison shows — because we copy directly from it every morning. Most other Ohio rate comparison sites don't.

The promise

  • No affiliate fees. No supplier pays us to be listed, ranked higher, or mentioned. We don't take a commission when you switch.
  • No curated supplier list. Every offer that PUCO publishes for your utility is here. We don't hide suppliers who don't participate in a referral program — because there is no program.
  • Rebuilt daily from PUCO. A scheduled job pulls the live energychoice.ohio.gov comparison page for each of the six major Ohio utility territories every morning and replaces the offer table.
  • Monthly fees are folded into the comparison. A 7.89¢/kWh rate with a $14.95 monthly fee is treated as ~9.39¢/kWh effective at 1,000 kWh — so the “savings” column never disagrees with the “monthly cost” column.

Why other comparison sites show different rates

If you check ChooseEnergy.com, EnergyBot.com, or OhioEnergyRatings.com against the same PUCO page on the same day, you'll usually see four things:

  1. Curated supplier lists. Most comparison sites only show suppliers that pay them per enrollment. Suppliers without an affiliate deal — often the cheapest ones on PUCO — never appear.
  2. Marked-up rates from the same supplier. When a supplier appears on both PUCO and an affiliate site, the affiliate rate is sometimes a few tenths of a cent higher. The spread funds the referral commission.
  3. Sponsored sort order. The default sort isn't price — it's commission. The cheapest plan a site shows isn't always at the top.
  4. “Marketplace prices” instead of supplier prices. Branded prices like “Choose Energy Price” are not what the supplier directly sells; they're a channel-specific rate that includes the affiliate's margin.

We have no quarrel with affiliate marketplaces — they're a legal business model. We just don't run one, and we want you to know the difference so you can verify any “lowest rate” claim against PUCO yourself.

How to read any comparison site safely

  • Check the rate type. A 5¢/kWh offer that resets every month is a teaser. The “variable, 1-month” label is the giveaway.
  • Add the monthly fee back in. A $14.95/mo fee adds about 1.5¢/kWh at 1,000 kWh. A “7.89¢ rate” with that fee is really ~9.39¢ — often higher than offers with no fee.
  • Confirm the term. A 6-month rate that auto-renews into a variable plan is a different product than a 12-month fixed.
  • Verify against PUCO. Every certified supplier in Ohio is required to publish their rates at energychoice.ohio.gov. If a comparison site's “lowest rate” isn't on PUCO, it's either a marketplace-only rate or a supplier that isn't serving your territory.
