Generation & Transmission Service (SSO)

Duke Energy Ohio

Current Rate

10.7000¢/kWh

Est. 1999

Duke Energy's default generation supply rate, which also includes transmission costs (Rider RTO). All bypassable together when you switch to a third-party supplier.

📜 History & Background

Duke Energy Ohio's standard generation service includes both generation and transmission costs — unlike AEP Ohio and AES Ohio, which itemize transmission separately. Duke Energy Ohio (formerly Cincinnati Gas & Electric, then PSI Energy after the Cinergy merger, then Duke Energy after the Progress Energy merger) serves the Cincinnati metro area and southwest Ohio. Its 2025 Electric Security Plan (Case No. 22-1263-EL-SSO) established the current generation rate structure. The bundled generation-plus-transmission rate of approximately 10.7¢/kWh includes the PJM Rider RTO (transmission) within the bypassable portion, which is an important distinction for switchers compared to AEP Ohio where transmission is non-bypassable.

⚙️ How It Works

Duke Energy Ohio's SSO rate is the Price to Compare for its residential customers. Because transmission (Rider RTO) is bundled into the bypassable generation rate rather than charged as a separate non-bypassable rider, Duke Energy Ohio customers who switch suppliers receive greater bill relief than customers of utilities that charge transmission separately.

If You Switch Suppliers

Bypassable — when you switch to a competitive supplier, both the generation component and the bundled transmission cost (Rider RTO) are replaced by your supplier's rate. This is one reason Duke Energy Ohio's Price to Compare can look higher than other utilities — it includes more bypassable costs.
