About Direct Energy Services LLC
Direct Energy is one of North America's largest competitive retail energy companies, operating across most U.S. deregulated electricity markets. NRG Energy acquired it from Centrica plc in January 2021 for $3.625 billion in cash.
Company background
Direct Energy Marketing Limited was acquired by UK-based Centrica plc (the parent of British Gas) in 2000 for approximately C$912 million, marking Centrica's entry into North America. Under Centrica, Direct Energy expanded aggressively across deregulated U.S. and Canadian markets through dozens of acquisitions and at one point served roughly six million customers.
In July 2020 NRG Energy announced an agreement to acquire Direct Energy from Centrica for $3.625 billion in cash. The acquisition closed January 5, 2021, making Direct Energy the largest piece of NRG's residential retail portfolio alongside Reliant Energy and Green Mountain Energy.
