About Inspire Energy Holdings, LLC

Inspire Clean Energy is a competitive retail electricity supplier marketing 100% renewable plans, sourced via Renewable Energy Certificates. Founded in 2014 by Patrick Maloney, it was acquired by Shell in 2021 and then by Rhythm Energy in June 2025.

Company background

Inspire was founded in 2014 in Santa Monica with a consumer-facing pitch focused on clean-energy sourcing and a flat-monthly subscription model in some markets. In Ohio, Inspire offers conventional fixed and variable rate plans filed through PUCO's Apples-to-Apples process.

Shell New Energies completed its acquisition of Inspire on September 15, 2021, with Inspire becoming a wholly-owned Shell subsidiary while retaining the Inspire brand. In June 2025, Houston-based Rhythm Energy acquired Inspire from Shell. Inspire's clean-energy claims rest primarily on Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), which represent renewable generation but are tradeable separately from the actual electrons delivered to customers.
