PUCO approved a stipulation (Case No. 20-1216-GE-COI) under which SFE Energy Ohio, Inc. and affiliate Statewise Energy Ohio, LLC collectively paid a $174,000 civil forfeiture to the state of Ohio, resolving a PUCO investigation into misleading and deceptive door-to-door sales practices including a June 2020 video showing a sales representative making false statements while not wearing required PPE. Under the settlement, both companies suspended all residential marketing and new customer enrollment in Ohio through March 15, 2021, terminated their hybrid/daily-rate plan product, and paid approximately $105,000 in re-rates and restitution to customers enrolled November 2019–June 26, 2020 who were charged more than the utility default rate. Maryland PSC approved a settlement (Case No. 9690) requiring SFE Energy to pay a $150,000 civil penalty and refund $400,000 to customers who were enrolled via door-to-door marketing, paid early termination fees, or received state utility bill assistance but were charged above the utility's default rate.
