Standard Service Offer — AEP Ohio's default generation supply rate. This is the Price to Compare. Replaced by your supplier's rate when you switch.
📜 History & Background
AEP Ohio's Standard Service Offer (SSO) is its default generation rate for residential customers who have not chosen a competitive supplier. AEP Ohio (formerly Columbus Southern Power and Ohio Power) was one of the first Ohio utilities to offer customer choice under Ohio's 1999 deregulation legislation (SB 3). AEP Ohio's SSO rates are established through Electric Security Plan proceedings at PUCO. The current generation rate of approximately 9.94¢/kWh was set in recent ESP filings and is available for comparison at energychoice.ohio.gov.
⚙️ How It Works
The GEN/SSO rate is AEP Ohio's Price to Compare — the generation rate charged to customers on default service. It is assessed per kWh and is the primary generation cost for residential customers who have not switched suppliers.
✓ If You Switch Suppliers
Fully bypassable — switching to a competitive supplier replaces this charge with your supplier's rate. AEP Ohio's service territory covers central Ohio including Columbus, making it one of the largest competitive electricity markets in the state.
