Recovers the cost of transmitting electricity over high-voltage transmission lines. Non-bypassable — stays on your bill even when you switch suppliers.
📜 History & Background
AES Ohio's Transmission Cost Recovery Rider (T8, formerly TCRR) recovers the cost of transmitting electricity over PJM high-voltage transmission lines. Like AEP Ohio's BTCR, transmission costs are governed by FERC through annual formula rate filings filed by AES Ohio. The T8 rider rate is updated annually to reflect FERC-approved transmission costs. The current rate (effective September 1, 2025) represents the most recent FERC-approved cost level. AES Ohio has invested significantly in high-voltage transmission infrastructure as part of PJM grid improvement plans.
⚙️ How It Works
The T8 rider charges approximately 0.66¢/kWh and is updated annually. It is a pure pass-through of FERC-regulated transmission costs — PUCO has no authority over the rate itself, only the mechanism for recovery.
🔒 If You Switch Suppliers
Non-bypassable — transmission costs must be paid by all AES Ohio customers regardless of supplier. Note that AES Ohio's T8 rate (0.66¢/kWh) is significantly lower than AEP Ohio's BTCR (4.34¢/kWh), reflecting differences in transmission investment levels between the two utilities.
