About NRG Home

NRG Home is the direct residential retail energy brand of NRG Energy, Inc., operating under the legal entity Reliant Energy Northeast LLC. It supplies electricity and natural gas to residential and small commercial customers across deregulated markets in Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, Delaware, and Washington D.C. NRG works with customers' existing local utility for delivery while competing on supply price, plan flexibility, and rewards.

Company background

NRG Energy became an independent public company in 2000 after a partial IPO spinoff from Northern States Power Company. After filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2003 and emerging later that year, NRG rebuilt as a generation and retail power company. It expanded its northeast retail footprint by acquiring Reliant Energy's retail operations in 2009, Dominion Resources' retail electric business in 2014 (adding ~600,000 accounts across Ohio and other northeastern states), XOOM Energy in 2018, and Direct Energy in 2021. The 'NRG Home' consumer-facing brand markets supply to residential customers in Ohio and other deregulated states through the legal entity Reliant Energy Northeast LLC, which is distinct from the separately registered XOOM Energy Ohio LLC.
