About Just Energy

Just Energy is a North American competitive retail electricity and gas supplier. It was acquired by IGS Energy in July 2025 and continues to operate independently under its existing brands (Just Energy, Hudson Energy, Amigo Energy, Tara Energy).

Company background

Just Energy was founded in 1997 in Ontario, Canada as Ontario Energy Savings Corp (later Energy Savings Income Fund). The 'Just Energy' brand was adopted in 2009, and the entity converted from an income trust to a Canadian corporation (Just Energy Group Inc.) effective January 1, 2011.

Following severe wholesale-price exposure during Winter Storm Uri in February 2021, Just Energy filed for creditor protection under Canada's CCAA on March 9, 2021 and Chapter 15 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court. It emerged from CCAA in December 2022 via a sale transaction led by a PIMCO-affiliated investor group, and ceased to be a Canadian reporting issuer at that time. IGS Energy then announced an agreement to acquire Just Energy on April 9, 2025 and completed the acquisition on July 1, 2025.
