Residential Distribution Credit
FirstEnergy
Current Rate
−1.7700¢/kWh (above 500 kWh, winter)
Est. 2009
Credit applied to consumption above 500 kWh during winter billing months (Nov–Apr). May have been superseded by the DMR credit in the 2026 rate case — verify against the current tariff.
📜 History & Background
The Residential Distribution Credit (RDC) was established in a prior FirstEnergy rate case as a credit applied to residential customers' consumption above 500 kWh during winter billing months (November through April). The credit was designed to mitigate the impact of tiered distribution rates on higher-usage residential customers during heating season, when consumption is typically higher. The 2026 rate case settlement (Case No. 24-0468-EL-AIR) introduced the DMR credit (see DMR), which overlaps with the RDC. The current status of the RDC relative to the new rate case structure should be verified against the 2026 tariff.
⚙️ How It Works
During winter billing months, consumption above 500 kWh receives a credit of approximately 1.77¢/kWh on the distribution portion of your bill. For a customer using 1,000 kWh in January, this would represent approximately $8.85 in credits on the excess 500 kWh.
🔒 If You Switch Suppliers
Non-bypassable — the RDC credit is a distribution-side adjustment that applies regardless of your electricity supplier.
